Dr Rees Cameron is a highly respected Consultant Gastroenterologist and Advanced Endoscopist based in Wellington, New Zealand, providing expert colonoscopy and non surgical weight loss services.
Dr Cameron is the senior Advanced Endoscopist in the Wellington region and consults privately at Wakefield Hospital and Bowen Hospital. With more than 20 years practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology he has great experience dealing with all conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. After specialist training in top endoscopy centres in the US and China, he has led the New Zealand development of many new endoscopic techniques, and offers unrivalled experience in treating pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract.
He is an instructor in Advanced Endoscopy both locally and internationally. As one of the pioneering Advanced Endoscopists in this country, he brings extensive experience to guide you in choosing the best options.
After a fellowship in liver transplant hepatology in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, his initial training in Advanced Endoscopy was with the renowned Dr Kenneth Binmoeller in San Francisco. Following this, Dr Cameron pioneered the use of cap and water-assisted (underwater) colonoscopy in New Zealand to improve patient comfort, and underwater endoscopic mucosal resection (UEMR) for the removal of large colonic polyps. In addition he established the endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for central NZ at Wellington Regional Hospital, developing this into one of the most capable units in Australasia.
In 2016 Dr Cameron undertook a fellowship under the renowned Professor Pinghong Zhou in the Zhongshan Hospital Endoscopy Unit in Shanghai, and subsequently offers advanced resection techniques (ESD) for tumours of the gut and POEM for achalasia. He has an ongoing relationship with that unit to keep abreast of new treatment options evolving in the world’s busiest and most innovative endoscopy service.
Dr Cameron is the regional lead in the management of patients with Barrett’s oesophagus, particularly in those with changes of dysplasia. He has expertise in modern surveillance techniques, and the resection and elimination of dysplasia and early oesophageal cancer.
He also offers curative treatment for Zenker diverticulum/pharyngeal pouch and cricopharyngeal dysfunction through minimally invasive endoscopic surgery.
In 2024 he began a minimally-invasive bariatric (weight loss) programme performing Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) at Wakefield Hospital to provide an option for those who do not want irreversible invasive surgery to treat obesity.
Dr Cameron is committed to providing timely service to his patients and aims to perform colonoscopy and gastroscopy within two weeks of referral or enquiry, and consultations within three weeks, with the option of three locations in Wellington and Upper Hutt.
